Hi, my name is Sudah, and since I was a child, I have dreamed of coming to Canada. Although that dream has come true, my journey has been filled with several unique obstacles that I had to overcome. I first arrived in Canada last December, when everything was covered in snow. I was so excited to begin the new life I had so often envisioned in this brand-new country.
Soon, I started college and applied to various places for employment. However, my excitement did not last long, as I did not receive any responses from potential employers, and the money I had saved from my home country gradually decreased. With that turn of events, my life became increasingly challenging. I soon learned that the job opportunities were less due to the current weather and climate.
However, I was hopeful that I would get a job when summer started. But, the feeling did not last long, as the coronavirus pandemic hit, and the economy began to suffer. As a result, many individuals became unemployed, and sadly, I was one of them. To be quite honest, I felt utterly hopeless. I had no savings and was on the brink of a breakdown when I heard about the AGEMA Work mobile app. I learned that they were a company that partnered with businesses to provide them with temporary staffing solutions, especially in the hospitality and services industry.
Also, the AGEMA app was a great way to pick up shifts and that individuals were allowed to choose their schedules and work when they wanted, which was a blessing for me since I was also attending classes at the time. For the first time in a long time, I began to feel a spark of hope. I applied and waited for a few days but received no updates. I was about to give up on employment with AGEMA Work when my first shift was approved. I jumped and screamed all around the house because, finally, I had been granted a genuine chance at pursuing my new life in Canada. I went for the first shift and soon began receiving additional shift work. Finally, I could pay my rent, get groceries, pay my credit card bills, and even save some money.
I worked full-time with AGEMA and began to connect with other people whose first jobs were through AGEMA. I also interned as a Human Resources Assistant and gained great hands-on experience. The AGEMA Work team has been nothing short of amazing, and they have been beyond helpful, encouraging, and supportive throughout my entire journey.
Like me, many people in Ontario are struggling to find job opportunities and financial relief. Trust me, I know, as I was one of them.
